one working theory they were remotely detonated by a cell phone the. >> it has the indications of being al qaeda or al qaeda-affiliated attack. >> there are no suspects. officials are tracking multiple "persons of interest" including a man of middle eastern descent being treated at a local hospital. president obama urged against a rush to judgment not using the word "terrorism" but vowed justice for those responsible. >> make no mistake we will get to the bottom of this. we will find out who did this. we will find out why they did this. any responsible individuals, any responsible groups, will feel the full weight of justice. >> cities across the country this morning are on high alert for other potential plots, officials say if you see something, say something but the best advise is keep living your

life. >> i realize there is no one in custody but is there anything at all that points to the work of international terrorists in this attack? >> officials point out it is significant that no group or individual in this case has claimed responsibility for the attack. they are pouring over the imprint of the bomb trying to compare it to past bombings, other bombs in the so-called catalog. but one thing about april this months what a hit of domestic terrorism. you will remember the 93 attack, stand off in texas at compound and in 1995, the oklahoma federal courthouse so officials are looking at international leads at this point. >> a bay area 6th grader waiting for his mother to cross the mother line is hospitalized this morning. recovering after the surgery to remove bomb shrapnel from his

leg, is expected to were hospitalized from ten to help ten days and is in intensive care. doctors are not sure of the extent of the damage to his leg. he was waiting do take a picture of his mom crossing the finish line when the first bomb went off. his dad was in the stands and found him lying on the ground in all chaos. abc7 news reporter will have a live update from martinez in 30 minutes. >> bay area woman was among many who ran in boston marathon finishing 45 minutes before the explosion and went to her hotel and there was talk of another possible explosive device. >> people are afraid to go upstairs because it is more than 25 stories and we just got word that they found another explosive device in a different hotel so the hotel starts --

starts taking people in. it was very somber. and upsetting, really, because it just went from being an amazing and exciting and positive day to, like, heartbreaking. >> april did not find out about the bombings until she got text messages and facebook questions about it from her friends. >> a recent poll shows the majority of americans are still worried a great deal about the possibility of a future terror attack. in a march poll 63 percent of americans say they are worried about an attack. a few polls taken in january found that 71 percent of americans say defending the united states from terrorist attacks should be a top priority for president obama. the issue of national security has been a top priority for at least 70 percent of americans when the poll has been taken since 2002. >> the i.r.s. says that boston area taxpayers will get an extension on filing their firm

to the junction. as we take a look at the drive coming from marin to central san rafael, that is a decent drive, as well, so, southbound 101 is clear making it to 580 and further to sausalito and over the golden gate bridge. what we do have, though, is construction back to the east bay along highway four, the southbound on-ramp to eastbound 4 is going to be shut down for a couple of months and the construction project is starting today so what you can do is take leland road to railroad and that will curve around and redebt you to highway just. 580, the drive is decent already but we are seeing some slow downs at 51 miles per hour over the altamont pass and loosen up as we get closer to livermore. >> next at 5:00, the amazing medical breakthrough bringing new home to people suffering from kidney diseases. >> 78-year-old man 5' from a boston marathon explosion was

live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. the morning after the unimaginable. we continue to follow breaking news from boston. so far, no one has claimed responsibility in the bombings at the boston marathon. the death toll stands at three. the number of injured is 145 in the attack that has the nation on alert. we will have complete coverage of the latest developments from boston but two breaking news stories here. the 9-1-1 system is down for

santa clara county. can you call 9-1-1 on your cell phone and get through but your land line is down. we will have more on this information and the fix that verizon is trying to make. a young victim is dead in the fire in san jose, a seven-year-old girl trapped inside a burning building and two other people were hurt. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is live with more on the story. >> a heartbreaking story for the family living inside this home. we are lending from the victim's grandmother that her name was mariah gomez. the home is across from the japanese american museum in downtown san jose. the call came at 11:30 an outbuilding in the rear of the home was on fire. possibly someone was trapped. it took ten minutes for firefighters to gain entry. when they went inside they found

the body of the seven-year-old mariah inside. firefighters say the girl's four-year-old sister was sleeping in the building near her and she escaped with her hair on fire burning the she ran from the structure into the main house and told her grandmother. she is hospitalized at this hour as is an elderly man who was near the fire. firefighters say it has been an extremely tough night for family and friends and for the firefighters who responded here. >> we have to sit down and do a debriefer for the guys but this is not about us, it is about the family. it was a tragic thing that happened. they lost a of althoughed -- a loved one. we will provide any support they need and hopefully the neighbors can assist.

>> her family is now returning to the home where the fire happened. they will speak to us in a few minutes about a beautiful little girl who lost her life in the fire. fire investigators are still on the scene trying to figure out exactly how this tragic fire happened. >> new details this morning in another deadly fire in san jose that broke out at 8:30 on south daniel way. officials are saying the fire claimed the lines of two memorial, an elderly woman was pulled from the home but died and the man would body was found in the rubble, no word on the identity of either victim. >> right now to the boston bombings, federal, state and local thunderstorms are doubling a massive vision to determine who is responsible for the deadly double bombing at the boston marathon. we are joined live from boston

to show you where things are now and the latest overnight developments as we wait for the 6:30 briefing our time. >> it is a difficult morning in boston. today, resolution democrats put on a brave face heading back to work after the city was rocked by bombs. >> this morning the city boston is on heightened alert. thousands were celebrating patriots day running in the mayor then and a few yards from the finish line at 2:50 p.m. the first bomb explodes. >> multiple people are down. i don't know the cause. stand by. >> chaos ensued amid the smoke. seconds later, another explosion. >> but of smoke and ultimate chaos and everyone running. >> i saw quite a few casualties. i saw a guy with his legs gone

at the need and ankles and feet were missing, shrapnel wounds on people the side of their head. not good. >> the bombs went off four hours after the start of the race 2350 to 100 arias apart. first responders rushed to scene and local hospitals quickly mobilized. some victims were transported by wheelchairs and stretchers. one official said it looked like a war zone. three people were killed and more than 140 were injured including an 8-year-old martin richard dead. a makeshift memorial was set up outside his hope. president obama was notified in minutes and promised action. >> i'm confident that boston will pull together and take care of each other and move forward as a proud student and -- proud city and the american people are with them every step. >> bomb techs are coping over forensic evidence for any clues.

>> officials are searching multiple "persons of interest" including an individual who is at a hospital being treated for wounds. they are trying to check out a person who was seen trying to get in a secure area five minutes before the bombs went off. >> this morning we have new home video showing the second blast that was shot in the viewing stands directly across from the where first bomb had just gone off. this video of the second bomb is new this morning and you can see it first people were stunned. someone began shouting "get out of the stands." people then left the stands quickly but without panic. >> this morning an 11-year-old martinez boy is hospitalized with shrapnel wounds from the blast. he was in boston do watch his mother compete in the race.

abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in martinez with that part of the story. >> we are at his school, martinez junior high school. it will be a i'll before he become. his mom wrote he will be in the hospital for another seven to ten days for follow-up surgeries. the 11-year-old was at the finish line in boston. he suffered from shrapnel wounds that pierced his leg to the bone. he and his dad were there waiting for his mom. they were there to support her. friends in martinez have been in contact with the family. >> he was waiting for his mom to go through the finish line to take pictures of her. shortly before she got there the bomb went off. >> you never think something like this will happen to someone you know or care about but when i does, you really do realize

how precious life is. this is the first boston marathon and friends say he was very excited about the trip. on her face book cage, she writes he is in i.c.u. but he is stable and has had surgery and will have another round surgery tomorrow. he is a 6th grader at martinez junior high and will tell 12 in a couple of weeks. live in martinez for abc7 news. >> abc7 news spoke by phone with several bay area runner whose rant race including a well-known marathoners from ross. dean was at the spot of a bomb 20 minutes before it went off. >> this was a wave of terror not sure which way to turn, where was safe, what was going on. it was kind of a numb -- it was sure -- surreal.

surreal. >> it was some we are and upsetting going from being amazing and exciting and positive to heartbreaking. >> april is one of many who traveled from the bay area to boston to run the race. >> we are getting a view of the explosions from a runner who was moments away from crossing the finish line. someone post video on youtube of their bother running the race seconds before the explosion. she was wearing a camera on her head when the bomb went off down the street. that woman was not hurt. obviously, she did not finish the race. >> in california, police agencies are on a state of heightened alert and asking all of us to be vigilant urging the public to report anything that appears out of the ordinary. the chop says it has a process for handling any threats and works closely with other

agencies to coordinate a response. officials in san francisco are talking about security with organizers of next month's bay to breakers race and the safety of the participants and spectators is always the first priority and over the next few days they will assess plans and procedures to make sure everyone is as safe as possible. bay to breakers is set for may 19 and brings tens of thousands to san francisco. >> security was stepped up at sporting events in the bay area because of the boston blast. the a's and warriors played in oak last night with an increase in security. as usual, fans at the game went through metal detectors and a's fans had their bags searched. behind-the-scenes bomb enoughing dogs swept through both venues. the mans everyone not deterred. >> in a big crowd after something like that, it can make you nervous but i have noticed an extra security presence.
